Saturday morning fever

Good morning world.
It's daybreak and we haven't slept at all.

We hopped into a cab hoping for some comfort food at Fong Seng Nasi Lemak only to see the shutters down illuminated only by the orange glow of the Buzz news stand.

It's alright.
Uncle, traffic light ahead turn right.
West Coast Market.
Just go straight.

Just for one hungry stomach.
3 in the North, just one in the West.
So we lost at open numbers.
Please proceed.
To bring us to no man's land.

Let's eat!

The cheong fun wasn't well steamed.
Translucent on the edges but the middle sections were still tough n rubbery.
I'm pretty sure he flirted with the auntie for the dollop of radish.
Tsk tsk.

I'm definitely biased when it comes to chwee kueh but I have standards alright.
The radish was salty oily.
Tremendously satisfying with the bland steamed rice cakes.
And just because you know I'd murder the chilli. :)

There never lived a plate of economical noodles so well devoured.
Oh sides.
Let me name thy sides to you.
Luncheon meat, fried chicken wing, cuttlefish patty, fried egg and cheese hotdog. oh my.
And it's unfair how you devour everything with a first name fried with no negative repercussions on your physique.
Health perhaps.
I imagine clogged arteries creeping up on you.

Nothing like a glass of hO Ho HO- hot horlicks. :)
2.5 hours of sleep and I'm out and about headed for home.

Lunch.
Could not be more satisfying.

So the only thing I wouldn't touch would be the intestines.
Everything else. :)
I loved the pickled vegetable ends.
Diced and cooked till soft (by duck fat) and sweet.

And as much as I never liked everything that looked like an internal organ,
I've started eating liver.
If only for its iron rich content.
A murky salted vegetable soup with liver and lean meat.

And a small bowl of kway.
Bliss came at a price of $11.70 for three.

Gotta love the Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood :)

bedok central interchange

I was wondering what kind of name Jin Mu was.
I obviously have an issue with my eyesight.
It's glaringly obvious that the signboard reads
Jimmy.
Should've known an ang mo name wouldn't do justice to my cheenah char kway teow.

Dismal right?
I know.
And my blood cockles had sand in them.
Oh Jimmy.

Then along came Qing Tian.
Oh it totally brought along clear skies to my dismal dinner attempt.
Dramatic I know.
But,

Now you see what I mean?
Just randomly, the Samsung SIII makes me perfectly confident without a compact camera.
It takes awesome pictures on the auto setting.
And back to the popiah that saved the day.
Long queues at this popiah stall that shares a stall space with Qing Tian Niang Dou Fu #01-58.
It was full on ingredients and full on flavour.
A mouthful of yum!

And just because Dad said that no trip to Bedok is complete without Bedok Chwee Kueh 勿洛水粿.
He's my best friend.
For best friends know exactly what you love to eat.

And just because the parents just came back from Genting Highlands,
I get takeaway from the Bakery at Genting Hotel.
American Cheesecake at a costly RM14.
The brownie cake base was moist and cheesecake a good balance of savoury sweet with a lemon tang.
Thanks for the love.
But hmm. I'd still rather my cheesecake from the CBTL outlets anywhere on my humble island. :)

Didn't feel like a Monday.
Long weekends are meant to be savoured.
Literally. :)

starting our long weekend with breakfast in petaling street #malaysia

massively big chwee kueh.
with preserved radish mixed with crunchy shallots.

yam cake to go.
comes with savoury shallots and spring onion.

chee cheong fun since 1943.
slippery rice noodles that went really well with the chilli/ sweet sauce.
there are also offerings of comforting porridge with sides of deep fried doughsticks.
but who needs -dough- sticks when you have...

fried food nation.
everything you could want.
fried.
this stall sold fried yong tau foo items just diagonally opposite.

and after all that,
I really needed a cold drink.
soy bean of course.
chilled.
drink it up on the spot :)

or dessert?
soya beancurd and you even get to opt for gula melaka.

oh Malaysia.
i'm glad the mad driving got us in at 7am on a Friday morning. :)

Eating it at where it's at!

Where's your favourite Yu Kee Duck Rice Outlet? I had a hungry mummy so she went ahead and bought this and was sorely upset when we kindly informed her that her $4 dinner order of roast duck and honey barbequed pork is from the same stall that we usually eat back at Bishan. Otherwise, she thought it was good.

Now daddy likes to associate himself with the Teochew Ah Hias. He's definitely on par when talking about pride. :) So he tried out their handmade fish and meatball meepok. Handmade for sure when you look at their balls of various shapes and sizes. Some smaller than others. Some just plain ugly. It's a taste that grows on you. I liked the softness of the fish/meatballs. Some people would rather it be bouncy. To each his own.

And it was a simple decision for me. No need to trawl the food centre. I know exactly what I wanted.

Eating it where it's at. Bedok Chwee Kueh. :) It's an oily mess and even if it's made with vegetable oil, it's probably not ranking high on the healthier food choices chart. But how can I resist? I'm a kueh everything person. Savoury. That is. We're talking pumpkin, carrot, yam, chwee KUEH. I love them all. But I digress. The chai poh (preserved radish) topping was sweeter than I last remembered. Fragrant with the addition of sesame seeds. The kueh was soft and meltingly tender. A perfect contrast to the crunchy taste bursts of its toppings. Yummydelicious!

Tonight's rendition of the handmade ban mian wasn't what I remembered. It's still got its queues but the soup stock lacked taste. It's been too long since I've been here.

Mummy's made mental notes to try the char kway teow. Daddy's probably going to have the curry noodles. I guess we'll be back here soon enough. :)

What do you recommend at the Bedok Interchange Food Centre?
