old school's where the good food's at!

Right across from Boon Tong Kee on the same side of the road on Balestier Road,

there's a corner coffeeshop 'Kai Juan' that quietly sits on the corner of the street.

And which,

I have only recently discovered,

is home to Ah Hak Bak Kut Teh.

Simple, old school, white and peppery 

These pickled vegetables are not your usual cai buay type but still, 

stewed in fat, 

they were moist and tender.

Slightly sweet and sour.

Best eaten with rice.

The clear peppery soup.

The pepper is cooked long enough to be cracked open and their spiciness seeps into the soup, 

mingled with the sweetness of the pork ribs.

This was a comfort to the stomach on a cold rainy day out.

And ask for refills anytime.

You definitely would. :)

Now I get why their clientele is varied and many of the well heeled type.

The friend who introduced this place to us?

She's got a former Chief Justice as her dad and she's a scholar for a local governmental organization currently based overseas and yet...

she comes back for this,

on her last day in Singapore.

Says a lot, doesn't it? 

They open from 5am to 2pm and from 5pm to 2am.

Anytime you need an early morning fix.

Early breakfast morning or early supper morning, 

these guys are open.

And Bak Kut Teh done like this,

is a hangover miracle pill. :)

Whatever happened to Founder?

Supper nights.

In my ideal world,

I thought this would be the perfect late night comfort food.

I mean, even Chow Yun Fatt loves it.

Or so the papers say.

Go for the long ribs.

$8.

Go ahead.

Indulge yourself a little.

But I'm hardly a fan of pork ribs.

I just wanted soup!

So all these side dishes were good.

Then what was my issue with Founder?

The soup! Oh my. :(

The soup eeez too salty!

Imagine the salt overpowering pepper.

I couldn't even bring myself to ask for a refill.

And why there was a queue for this,

I could not comprehend.

But it'll be a long while before a repeat visit.

If ever.

We needed failproof desserts.

Nutella and Pistachio Waffle.

If you like a heavy vanilla base for your ice creams,

this is where you'll find it.

Keep running.

Just so I can keep eating. :)

through the years

Starting out with the pretty daybreak that greeted me while walking out to take my bus this morning. :)

It's Day 2 of marking and I decided that today shall be the day I buy home some...

 I'm just right next to this place so how could I go home without any? Technically I did as was the case on Day 1 since I was going off to zumba classes. My love affair with this was way back in secondary school days. Not so long ago of course. Double digit long.

Hmm. We used to take a cab rushing down from school at Upper Bukit Timah Road just to get here in time for tea and takeaways. How's that for love?

 



The shop front and it's baking premises have remained unchanged over the years but their packaging has seen an innovative update. But all that's just about the looks. What about the taste? That's the most important part of any food item isn't it?

So what do you think? :)

When they say a picture speaks a thousand words, I think I've achieved that and more with this photo right there!

**Just one thing I'd add: Ladies especially, I've heard that they do not use lard in their pastries so eat up and enjoy!
