Remembering Mr Lee Kuan Yew - Time Nor Tide

Mr Lee Kuan Yew had been admitted to Singapore General Hospital on February 5th 2015 for severe pneumonia at the age of 91. For many, we understood the grim implications of such a news release. The Lunar New Year came two weeks after and in the course of the festivities, many had pushed this piece of news to the back of their minds till the next update came about from the Prime Minister's Office. And from then forth, with Mr Lee in critical condition and a deterioration of his health, Singaporeans waited with bated breath and hoped upon hope that there would be a miracle. Somehow.
That he would fight back, that he would live.

But on March 23rd 2015, this was not to be. And the man who was the hero of our times, had slipped away peacefully at 3.18am in the wee hours of the morning to be reunited with the love of his life. For the minutes that felt like hours, and days that felt like years, it was a long time in waiting, for his ashes to finally be mixed with his wife so that they could be united even in death. His attention to detail was not lost on the people around him and you would expect even more so for his wife, Mdm Kwa. His love story has made its rounds in the news from the time of Mrs Lee's departure but here, at his final parting, we again relive through the anecdotes of how indeed, a true measure of a man is in his capacity to love.

The Just In Time package for schools arrived yesterday and was to be disseminated by the next morning. The assembly this morning was a 15 minute video of Mr Lee Kuan Yew's life and legacy produced by Mediacorp. Even after the massive media suspension and overload from the past couple of days, many of us were reduced to tears. And how were we to teach for the next two periods? I steeled myself for a torrent of tears, if I cried, then so be it. But I bore in mind that what I had to say, had far more impact on the students than my tears. I made it through, but only barely so. I can now speak eloquently and wax lyrical about the man, his life and his legacy but yet, I'm reduced to tears, touched by what he has devoted his entire life to- the land I call home.
The place called Singapore.

For him to call this my people, my country, my home. Only he qualifies to speak as such. Some people have wrote on how they have found the term 'founding' floundering for Mr Lee Kuan Yew but for this generation of Singapore, the man we have met and seen what he has done for us as a nation, was Mr Lee Kuan Yew, not Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. And really, that was that. I'm heartened to see that at this time, many have poured out their hearts for their gratitude towards Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Growing up, I heard unhappiness and discontent in the coffeeshop talks of many a taxi driver and the older generation about Mr Lee Kuan Yew and the People's Action Party. And who are the ones who are sending their love and tributes willingly now? These very same people I do believe. In the course of Singapore's growth as a nation, they have seen and enjoyed the fruits of his labour. We put aside our differences, we stop fighting and we are united in our mourning of this great leader's passing.

"Could I have lived my life differently?" Mr Lee once reflected.
"Maybe yes, but probably not. At each stage I made what was then the best choice. Having taken that decision, I changed direction and there was no turning back."

These Hard Truths that kept Singapore growing, I may not have agreed in all of the man's beliefs but for his decisions, to have born the weight of a country on his shoulders for all of his adult life, it is true and I salute that he has, at that time, made the best choice possible for us all.

And in closing, and I have changed the gender of the character in the words of Tim Rice as lyrics for Madonna's Lament in Evita.

I could have any prize that I desired
I could burn with the splendor of the brightest fire
Or else or else I could choose time
Remember I was very young then
And a year was forever and a day
So what use could fifty, sixty, seventy be?
I saw the lights and I was on my way

And how I lived! How they shone!
But how soon the lights were gone!

The choice was yours and no one else's
You can cry for a body in despair
Hang your head because he is no longer there
To shine, or dazzle, or betray.
How he lived, how he shined
But how soon the lights were gone

Eyes, hair, face, image
All must be preserved
Still life displayed forever
No less than he deserved

These words were so aptly written, for the man, who indeed, deserved no less.
Thank you.
Thank you, Sir.

Racing past the grounds and headed straight for the skies!

From the directors of Disney's Cars, comes another heartwarming tale of Dusty, the plane who has a fear of heights and seeks to conquer this fear with the help of his friends.

I don't do well with heights either but I had grandpa to help me conquer that fear.
A ferris wheel ride that made me cry was when he realised I had the courage the size of a mouse and that something needed to be done before it was too late.

So guess what grandpa did?

He brought me up a rollercoaster. At the age of 58 with a high blood pressure, he ignored the health advisory signages and insisted on bringing his granddaughter for what literally was the ride of her life on Space Mountain- Disneyland.

What came out of that? Mad hair flying everywhere, an inexplicable sense of exhilaration and the best part? Safety in the knowledge of having my gramps with me.

Now he's just too old to be travelling long haul but Space Mountain rides will always have a special place in my heart.

And I'd love to watch Planes with gramps. Just to let him know...
I haven't forgotten.
:)

A weekend in Bintan Lagoon Resort with Journeyful and Nuffnang!

An hour's ferry ride away from Singapore's Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal brings you to the doorstep of Bintan Lagoon Resort & Golf Club. The Indonesian beachfront resort overlooks the South China Sea, boasts 473 rooms and has 11 food and beverage outlets, spa and massage facilities with a diverse range of land and sea activities for guests to choose from. The resort has also won numerous awards for both of its spectacular 18 hole golf courses.

The recent facelift has seen the addition of a new ferry terminal which makes travelling to and fro from the resort a breeze. The rooms have also been refitted with flat screen televisions, day beds for lounging and even marbled furnishings in the toilets. Bintan Lagoon Resorts has also recently received the Green Hotel Award from Indonesia. The first in Southeast Asia, they have been awarded the U.S green resort certification - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The LEED provides third-party verification that a building/community was designed and built using strategies targeted at what matters most - energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emission reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts all thanks to the concerted efforts of their Green Team.

Now that's a holiday worth taking. Nothing but rest and relaxation with minimal carbon footprints. :)

And a very warm welcome to...

Paradise.

Deluxe rooms with a seaview starting from S$140++/night.

A personalized welcome note and a fruit platter.
How's that for hospitality?

RICE, Bintan’s lagoon resort’s beachfront bar and dining option.
Poised on a stretch of private soft sand beach, take in a spectacular amphitheatre view of the vast South China Sea. During the day, the restaurant is bathed in natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows and it couldn't have been more perfect for the press conference.

Simple open faced canapes.
But the vibrant colours of the fresh ingredients used and careful presentations made it almost too hard to eat these pretty bites.

Almost being the key word.
I wolfed them down anyway.
The press conference was a very short and informal affair.
Because I really suppose there's a lot more than just talk about Bintan Lagoon and Golf Resort.
And a resort tour would just be the best way to go around it.
Pun totally intended.

Angsoka villa.
Aside from rooms connected to the main hotel lobby, there are also many villas available for stays.
And this was just one of the 4 room villas with cooking and washing facilities, a private pool and hey, a poolside BBQ pit.
What would one BBQ? They have an order list where you can opt for BBQ packages and they'll send over all that's required for that awesome poolside BBQ.

And I think I wanna marry you. :)

Stunning hectares of green.

Play considerately.

Sunset over the green.
Makes you catch your breath a little.

An a buggy ride brought us through the course to our dinner venue.

A dream wedding set up hey.

So drink up and make merry.

That's a lot of heart into a banquet table setup outdoors.

Meze appetizers showcasing their Mediterranean restaurant Orzo.

The allure of a tropical beach holiday.

And it only looks even more beautiful at nightfall.

Tempura from the resort's Japanese restaurant Miyako.

Bintan Delight.
These cocktails may have different names but can be found on the menus of most of its dining establishments.
So stop for a drink every now and then during the course of your stay
and breathe.
There's no place like Bintan Lagoon Resort to kick back and chillax.

A girl could only hope.

For more of these island adventures.

So she writes and sends them up into the sky on these sky lanterns.
Don't bother with the instructions.
Ask.
The friendly staff are dripping sweat, burning their hands if only to send those wishes for you. :)

And just because I asked.
Look who came home with me after the dinner?

I went to bed happy. :)

Cheers to a sweet 17th N.Y.D.C

Has it already been 17 years?

Thanks to the kind peeps of NYDC and Nuffnang,
this was an invite to NYDC's Happy Sweet 17th Birthday Party at their outlet in Bugis Junction.
And tonight,
it seems that the legal drinking age has been lowered to 17 hey!

Waldorf Salad with a Hic.
Grapes soaked in whisky.
Throughly infused, yet maintaining a fresh crunch.
How do they do it?
Decadent.

GM of NYDC giving her speech before the party moves on into full swing!

Vanilla milkshake with a shot of Baileys topped with chocolate sauce.
And you can even choose your level of poison up to a max of three Bailey shots.
I'm not sure if there's a price difference on that though.
But if there's good fat,
this is some darn good fat!

They had a Lemon Shiver on the menu for the longest time.
And joining the ranks now,
meet Raspberry Tremble. :)

This berry blast seemed more of a hit.
Berry blend.
All the verry good fibres and antioxidants.
Healthier choice and not a little less flavour.

And because we care,
we share...
Some nachos and dips.
Chilli with too much spice, blue cheese mayo and cheesy artichoke.
Guess which was the crowd pleaser?

Star crossed lovers they no longer aren't.
Romeo & Juliet making a comeback with herbed rice.
This was good.
Till the bottom where there was just too much oil.
It got a little overwhelming just looking at the amount of glistening sheen on the base of the plate.

Picasso.

All your favourites into a biscuit thin pizza.
Yet another comeback and better than before.
A garlic mayo base,
topped with tender meatballs, juicy ham, mushrooms.
And this time,
it's CHEESE that takes the cake.
<3>

Tequila flamed Drunken Masta.
It left too much of a bitter aftertaste for me.
I'd rather have seafood on the rocks.
A generous slice of fish, large prawn, clams and shell pasta.
This might've been better with a linguine option.
And feel free to make your request on your choice of pasta.
Drink it like you mean it.

Yankee's in town.
Hold the barbeque sauce asked for it to be served on the side.
And this was good.
Very good.
Bacon wrapped bratwurst and grilled chicken.
Served with a side salad and fluffy crisp wedges.

While we take a break from all the fun and games,
we hear from the winners of the birthday message contest-
A year's supply of mudpie for each of the three winning entries.
So Pick-Us-So (Piccaso) that we can enjoy!
Wit.
I'm impressed :)
Now that's having your cake and eating it too.
For a whole year at that!

And nothing could've prepared our table for this.
Between the 5 of us.
Dessert for you?

An Englishman in New York.
Earl Grey meets cake.
I loved this.
And coming in a close second was
Mango mayhem.
Mousse with fresh mangoes.
And those are the two of my favourite things. :)

Muddy mudpie.
Waits for no man.
Eat it before it suffers a meltdown.

And they raised a few shrieks coming in for the ones that were 17.
Oh now I felt old.
Really old.

This was forgettable.
The crust did not go well for this pie.
To be honest?
I'd still with Goldmine.
Oldie but goodie.

Now that we had some happy tummies.
It's photo moments.
With the stars.

Miss Tamchiak and Mag of Modgam.
We had a ball being the 'older ones'
And in full denial of it. ;)

Catherine of Camemberu.
It's like meeting a star and being starstruck.
Hi we finally meet and I didn't even say much.

And of course she was the star blogger seated with us!
To more events with you :)

Superbly sweet 17.
This was an awesome event.
Tuesday night yo!
Thanks for having us over at your birthday NYDC.
To many more years of love and sweet treats ahead. :)
